“Voted N on Virginia SB 553, the Senate companion requiring monthly reporting of water supplied to data centers”

The Senate of Virginia passed SB 553, the Senate companion to HB 496, requiring water users that report withdrawal and use data to the State Water Control Board and supply water offsite to report monthly the total volume of potable water and, separately, reclaimed water provided to data centers holding a Department of Environmental Quality air permit. Outcome: Passed the Senate 25-15. The bill later passed the House, was resolved in conference, and was approved by the Governor on April 13, 2026 as Chapter 896, effective January 1, 2027.
